Course 3 | Primordial Soup

4 billion years ago, deep in earth's ocean, a volcanic vent spewed molten carbon into the water in its vicinity, vaporizing some before reacting with the hydrogen and oxygen, and trace molecules of dissolved ammonia to form the first organic compounds.
Course 4 | Abiogenesis

Life began with simplicity. In the primordial chaos, microscopic structures formed—enclosures, boundaries, the first spark of order within disorder. Abiogenesis: the birth of life from the lifeless. Just as you form boundaries on your plate, so too did nature create the first cellular forms, separating the inside from the out, laying the foundation for all life to come.

Life innovated on a cosmic scale—turning sun into sustenance. Photosynthesis emerged as nature's alchemy, converting light and air into the building blocks of life. These humble ingredients, basking in light and transforming energy, changed our atmosphere forever, gifting the oxygen you breathe.
